Norwich is the capital of historic East Anglia, where some of England’s most profound changes have taken place. Despite its partial industrialization in recent years, Norwich was essentially an agricultural centre for many centuries. To this day it retains much of this charm and rich heritage, making it ideal for a city break It used to be said that Norwich had 365 pubs and 52 churches, so you could get drunk every day of the year in a different pub, and on every Sunday confess in a different church! Whether or not this was strictly true, there are nevertheless a startling number of both, in addition to its magnificent cathedral. Norwich is also the most important shopping centre in East Anglia and has a lot to offer in the way of entertainment and interesting hotels, many of them in its narrow streets and alleyways. Norwich also has one of the largest open-air markets in the country, which is busy every weekday, with fruit, flowers, vegetables, and other goods sold from stalls with colourful canvas roofs. Norwich is a city of festivals with the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, a superb multi-venue musical event, held in May, the Lord Mayor’s celebrations including carnival and firework display in July, the CAMRA beer festival in October, the largest beer festival outside London, plus the Norfolk Comedy Festival running throughout October and November. The 12th century Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery is one of the finest Norman secular buildings anywhere in Europe. Today Norwich Castle is the county’s principal museum, packed with treasures and collections of national importance. Complementing this is The Forum, which houses a multi-million pound heritage visitor attraction, the finest regional public library in the country, the tourist information centre, and a variety of places to eat.
